Description

Taylor University Lyric Theatre presents The Light in the Piazza

Taylor University Lyric Theatre presents a full production of The Light in the Piazza in the Butz Carruth Recital Hall. With a book by Craig Lucas and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, this romantic musical won six Tonys in its 2005 Broadway premiere. Its soaring musical style has brought it to both musical theatre companies and opera houses. Based on a novella by Elizabeth Spencer, the story is set in the 1950s and revolves around Margaret Johnson, a wealthy Southern woman, and her daughter Clara. The two spend a summer together in Italy. When Clara falls in love with a young Italian man, Margaret is forced to reconsider not only Clara's future, but her own deep-seated hopes and regrets as well. With a balanced cast featuring four female and four male principal characters, this show engages important topics that include risk and love, intellectual ability and choice, and cultural differences.
